Primpex Tablet contains Co-Trimoxazole an antibiotic, a combination of Sulfamethoxazole 400mg and Trimethoprim 80mg that works against a wide spectrum of bacteria. The dual-action formulation targets different stages of bacterial metabolism for enhanced antimicrobial effectiveness. Uses Primpex Tablet treats urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, ear infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and Pneumocystis pneumonia. It’s also used prophylactically in immunocompromised patients and for traveler’s diarrhea prevention. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial folic acid synthesis while Trimethoprim blocks the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This sequential blockade in folate pathway prevents bacterial DNA synthesis and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death. Duration of Action Effects begin within 1-4 hours after administration. The half-life of Trimethoprim is approximately 8-10 hours while Sulfamethoxazole’s half-life is 9-12 hours, enabling twice-daily dosing in most cases. Dosage Condition Recommended Dosage Frequency Standard adult infections 1-2 tablets Every 12 hours Severe infections 2-3 tablets Every 12 hours UTI prophylaxis 1 tablet Daily at night PCP treatment 15-20mg/kg (TMP) Divided over 24 hours Warnings Discontinue immediately if skin rash, sore throat, fever, or pallor occurs as these may indicate serious adverse reactions. Not recommended for pregnant women near term, nursing mothers, infants under 2 months, or patients with severe liver or kidney impairment. Side Effects Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and mild skin rashes. Serious side effects may include severe skin reactions, blood disorders, liver problems, kidney problems, and photosensitivity reactions. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Not recommended during pregnancy, especially near term. Contraindicated during breastfeeding as both components pass into breast milk and may cause kernicterus in jaundiced infants or G6PD deficiency.
